The Plitvice Lakes are a series of sixteen lakes interconnected by spectacular waterfalls, set in a deep woodland and populated by deers, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The colours change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water that is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapor. The lake is approximately 60 m across. The Laguna Colorada Red Lagoon is a shallow salt lake in the southwest of the altiplano of Bolivia, close to the border with Chile. The lake contains borax islands, whose white color contrasts nicely with the reddish color of its waters, caused by red sediments and pigmentation of some algae.

Ending plastic waste with big promises?

[Answer] What is the largest lake in Europe?
The first-ever chemical analysis of plastic collected from beaches around Lake Geneva detected cadmium, mercury and lead -- sometimes in very high concentrations that exceed the maximum permitted under EU law. The abundance of toxic chemicals that are now restricted or banned in plastic production reflects how old the plastic litter could be, reports the study published in Frontiers in Environmental Science. The study -- one of very few to examine plastics in freshwater lakes -- indicates that like oceans, freshwater habitats are also affected by plastic pollution. In this respect, entanglement and ingestion are of greatest concern," says Dr. Montserrat Filella, lead author of this research, based at the Department F.

On a sunny August morning at 31st Street Beach, Tyrone Dobson assembled 20 volunteers to pick up litter from the shores of Lake Michigan. At first glance, the effort seemed unwarranted. After all, the tire tracks from a Chicago Park District beach groomer were still fresh in what appeared to be pristine sand. But Dobson, senior volunteer engagement manager for the Alliance for the Great Lakes, knew better. He instructed the volunteers to take a closer look.

Where there are humans, there is trash. Futhermore, as human populations grow and affluent societies become increasingly wasteful, rubbish heaps grow as well, at times reaching unbelievable proportions and scales. While some are efficient, modern, and advanced, others are unsanitary and serious environmental and human health hazards. In terms of sheer area covered, we have listed some of the largest landfills, trash dumps, and waste disposal sites in the world.
